IELTS Structure and Scoring

IELTS has four components: Listening (30 minutes plus transfer time, 40 questions), Reading (60 minutes, 40 questions), Writing (60 minutes, two tasks), and Speaking (11-14 minutes, face-to-face with an examiner). Each section is scored on a 0-9 band scale; the overall band is the average of the four section scores, rounded to the nearest 0.5.

Writing Component Strategy

IELTS Academic Writing Task 1 asks you to describe a graph, chart, table, diagram, or map in at least 150 words. Focus on the main trend and significant data points. Writing Task 2 is an essay of at least 250 words. Spend approximately 20 minutes on Task 1 and 40 minutes on Task 2. Task 2 carries more weight.

Speaking Component Strategy

The IELTS Speaking test has three parts: a structured interview on familiar topics, a two-minute monologue on a given topic, and a two-way discussion on abstract topics. Examiners score Fluency and Coherence, Lexical Resource, Grammatical Range and Accuracy, and Pronunciation.
