The CCA, CCP and CCE Tiers
Citrix organised certification into three tiers per track. Associate credentials covered administration of an existing deployment, Professional credentials covered deployment and implementation, and Expert credentials covered design and architecture.
The tiers stacked: Citrix's own guidance stated that the CCP-V credential was attained by holding CCA-V and then passing the Professional-level exam, rather than by sitting a single standalone exam.
Fixed Validity Periods
Unlike most vendors of the era, Citrix gave its certifications a defined lifespan. Citrix stated that CCA-V and CCE-V certifications remained current for three years from the date attained.
That has a practical consequence for anyone holding an older Citrix credential: it did not merely become dated, it formally expired. Presenting it as current would be inaccurate in a way that is easy for a knowledgeable reader to check.
The 2018 and 2019 Renames
Citrix rebranded almost its entire portfolio within roughly two years. XenApp and XenDesktop became Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktops. NetScaler ADC became Citrix ADC and NetScaler Gateway became Citrix Gateway. XenServer became Citrix Hypervisor, and NetScaler SD-WAN became Citrix SD-WAN.
This is why tracing an older Citrix credential is confusing: the exam name references a product that, under that name, no longer exists, even though the technology continued and is still sold.
Where the Tracks Lead Today
The virtualization track continued through successive exams as the product was renamed, reaching the Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktops administration exams. The networking track continued as the ADC exams, with current prep guides published as public PDFs on Citrix's site.
No credit carries from a retired exam to a current one. Verify current exam codes and requirements directly with Citrix, since the catalogue has changed repeatedly through the renames and the Cloud Software Group acquisition.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do Citrix certifications expire?
Yes, and this is unusual among vendors. Citrix stated on its own blog that CCA-V and CCE-V certifications remain current for three years from the date attained. That means older Citrix credentials expired on a defined schedule rather than simply becoming outdated, and expired badges are displayed as such on credential platforms.
Why do the product names on my Citrix certificate no longer exist?
Citrix renamed most of its portfolio around 2018 and 2019. XenApp and XenDesktop became Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktops, NetScaler ADC became Citrix ADC, NetScaler Gateway became Citrix Gateway, XenServer became Citrix Hypervisor, and NetScaler SD-WAN became Citrix SD-WAN. The products continued; only the names changed.
Who owns Citrix now?
Citrix was acquired and combined with TIBCO under Cloud Software Group in 2022. Credential records from that period may show Cloud Software Group as the issuer alongside or instead of Citrix. The ADC line has since reverted to the NetScaler name under the new ownership.
What were the Citrix certification tiers?
Citrix used a three-tier structure per track: Associate, Professional and Expert. In virtualization those were CCA-V, CCP-V and CCE-V; in networking, CCA-N, CCP-N and CCE-N. Higher tiers generally required holding the tier below before sitting the next exam.
What does this Citrix Certifications section cover?
Citrix certifications use 1Y0 exam codes across the virtualization and networking tracks, tiered as CCA, CCP and CCE. Two things make Citrix credentials distinctive: they carried a fixed validity period rather than lapsing quietly, and nearly every product was renamed in 2018 and 2019, so the names on older certificates no longer match current products.
